Akira Tsuzuki｜Katakuchi Bowl

Akira Tsuzuki (都築明) is a Japanese ceramic artist known for his understated, architectural forms and nuanced dark glazes. His work explores the depth of black, revealing subtle shifts of green and grey through the interplay of dark clay and transparent glaze.

Born in Sendai, Miyagi Prefecture, Japan, in 1980, Tsuzuki completed his postgraduate studies at Tohoku University of Art and Design in 2005. Following his studies, he moved to Hasami, Nagasaki Prefecture, where he established his ceramic practice.

Working with dark clay and transparent glaze, Tsuzuki creates pieces with a distinctive depth of colour and quiet presence. His forms balance straight lines and curves, with carefully considered proportions and structural details that give each piece a restrained architectural quality.

Tsuzuki believes that tableware should complement rather than dominate a meal. His work is designed to find its place naturally at the dining table, allowing the food and the vessel to come together as a complete composition.

A sculptural ceramic bowl featuring a softly rounded form and a gently extended pouring spout. Its deep grey glaze reveals subtle tonal variations across the surface, creating a quiet, understated presence.

The low, balanced silhouette gives the piece a sense of weight and simplicity, while the delicate spout adds both character and function. A versatile object for serving, pouring or bringing a quiet sculptural touch to the table.

A considered blend of everyday utility and understated form.
